Recruitment Jargon Buster Part 1
If you’re new to recruitment and want to know what's being talked about, below is a list of some of the most frequently used recruitment terms you’re likely to encounter.
Applicant Tracking Software
An ATS system - or applicant tracking software - is a solution implemented to ease the burden on recruiters by streamlining the hiring process. Applicant Tracking Software identifies keywords within a CV allowing for filtering of candidates; something incredibly useful when working with a sizeable applicant pool or for a specialist role. Being bespoke to individual businesses, Applicant Tracking Software is designed to function within a range of different industries and with a focus on various job roles.
Competency Based Interview
A type of interview where the interviewer tests how compatible the applicant is for the potential role. A competency based interview usually takes place when a candidate does not have prior experience but meets the hiring criteria; you’re likely to see things such as role playing or hypothetical situations used as a part of a competency based interview.
Assessment Centre
Utilised by many businesses to gauge the quality of candidates, an assessment centre, or candidate assessment is where candidates are put through a series of tasks or tests to see how effectively they work within the business environment. This may also include team tasks or specific lines of questioning relevant to the industry or role.
Onboarding
Once a candidate has been selected for the role, an onboarding process is likely to take place. Onboarding is an opportunity for the new hire to gain the knowledge and skills required to work within the company with the process frequently involving training or a simulation of a regular working day. By making use of this, an employee can get accustomed to their new role far quicker and can become a functional member of the team earlier than they would otherwise.
Pre-Employment Screening
Something that should be undertaken prior to any hire – especially within sensitive industries – a pre-employment screening is a background check into an applicant. The screening looks to validate the experience the candidate has listed on their CV as well as uncover any criminal convictions, compensation claims, or general employment issues they may have had across their career.
Right to Work
When looking to find employment in the UK, you first have to meet a series of criteria that give you permission to do so. Right to Work is heavily imposed by the government and looks to prevent illegal working and immigration; when looking to carry out recruitment of any sort, this check needs to be carried out.
