Efficiency should always be the goal within a hiring process; you want to ensure that you’re attracting high-quality talent and quickly onboarding new hires to maximise your business. However, this isn’t always easy to do and there is a whole assortment of barriers that may unnecessarily complicate the recruitment process throughout its various stages.

Lack of Clarity 

Changing jobs is a major life decision and applicants tend to do a great deal of research into the roles they’re applying for. You should always look to match this enthusiasm and provide them with as much information as possible – you may also wish to tell them about things like the culture and history of the company, your outlook on key subjects, as well as any additional benefits they may receive from your business (free lunches, car parking, etc). A lack of clarity can be a major obstacle within the recruitment process and will only serve to cause complications down the line. Competition for talent is at an all time high at the moment and you’re seldom going to be the only business someone applies with. With the vast majority of your applicants being heavily reliant on their pay, they may be inclined to simply choose the first opportunity offered to them. Of course, the recruitment process may take a while - especially when hiring for a high-level role – but this is all the more reason to streamline where possible or at least provide applicants with a rough timescale of when they should expect to hear back.

For speed, efficiency, and clarity it's vital that your recruitment team is in regular contact with the other areas of your business involved in the hiring process. Within larger businesses especially, the team in charge of recruitment may not have any experience working within or around the advertised role and will therefore seldom have the knowledge to identify the skill set required – this is an instance in which communication becomes absolutely essential.

Technology 

There are a multitude of tools available on the market when it comes to supporting recruitment. Many of these look to streamline the process or provide solutions to assist in-house recruitment teams. Applicant Tracking Systems are one such example of technology used within recruitment and a great way to remove administrative and communication-based barriers from the hiring process. While technology can help to mitigate many of the barriers within the recruitment process, when incorrectly utilised can actually serve as an additional barrier to overcome.
